Stimulatory neuropeptides like neurotensin play an important role in regulating the activity of midbrain dopamine neurons. Here, I will describe a signaling pathway downstream of stimulatory neuropeptide receptor activation that regulates intracellular calcium levels to control the synchronization of dopamine neurons of the ventral tegmental area. I will further discuss how this pathway is engaged in a state-dependent manner, hunger versus thirst, to control reward outcome valuations.
