<p>The decision to eat is often influenced by factors beyond homeostatic or hedonic needs. Here, I will describe a brain–body signaling pathway through which altered lipid metabolism in peripheral organs can severely suppress ketogenic food intake. We identified a brainstem circuit and a potential metabolic signal linking these peripheral metabolic changes to the control of feeding. I will also present our findings on the population of sensory neurons in the brainstem and their role in controlling energy balance through effects on peripheral adipose tissue and liver.
